La traduction littéraire à l’épreuve : San-Antonio en hongrois
Krisztina Horváth
Using concrete examples from the Hungarian translation of two novels by SanAntonio/Frédéric Dard, the paper reflects on a possible textual clash between the source text and the metatext, as well as a cultural clash, which makes stylistic equivalence an impossible ideal to achieve. If stylistic equivalence, which Popovič identifies as the cornerstone of translation, is not simply a matter of linguistic, lexical, or semantic equivalence, nor even cultural equivalence, in the case of writing that is deeply rooted in its cultural and, above all, social context, the translation of realia always presents major obstacles to stylistic and thematic equivalence, and the shifts in translation systematized by Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek, among others, seem inevitable. What strategies could be implemented by the courageous Hungarian translators of San-Antonio? Indeed, the style of Fleur de nave vinaigrette, translated in 1994 by Máté Botos, is full of poetic gems that make the translator’s task much more delicate than the referential difficulties.
