Est-il possible de traduire la « Comédie urbaine » d’Insa Sané en hongrois ?

Dávid Szabó

Is it possible to translate Insa Sané’s novels into Hungarian? In this paper we will analyse the main difficulties that should be faced by a translator trying to translate contemporary French-Senegalese writer Insa Sanés’s novels into Hungarian. The novel we have analysed is Daddy est mort (Retour à Sarcelles) [Daddy is dead (Back to Sarcelles], the 4th volume of his series “Comédie urbaine” [Urban comedy]. The novel’s richness in non-conventional language does not seem to be a major problem as we mostly find in it examples of colloquial speech and general slang. An eventual translator should be more concerned about certain rhythm and rhyme patterns resembling slam poetry and references to French song lyrics mostly unknown to the Hungarian public.
