To write their texts, many French rappers use dictionaries. But they also resume this generic category to raise the issues of the relation between identities and language in particular popular tongues and slang like in the following artworks: D’arobaz à Zéro of Médine, Mon dico of Demi Portion Freestyle du dico de Squeezie (feat Big Flo et Oli), A à Z of Sinik, De A à Z of Nams and A.Z of Guizmo. The aim of this article is to explore the poetic and intercultural issues of slang in those previously named artworks. First, we show that those dictionaries are a kind of dictionary travesties that emerge thanks to the context of the oralization of this kind of artwork. Then we present the practices of slang as uses result from an interest of lexicographers in favor of a mix of the French language among other things, particularly Alain Rey. Finally, we point out that for those rappers who consider themselves as the elite of districts, the slang is related to a defensive argument of a district identity opposed to standard French spoken in the elite districts.
