« Je est une Autre » : la fragmentation du Moi féminin chez Hedwig Dohm et Gabriele Reuter

This article compares two fin-de-siècle texts by the German and feminist writers Gabriele Reuter and Hedwig Dohm. In both works, the heroines feel torn between their personal aspirations and the social norms that dictate their behavior. By representing women’s mental illness as being caused by social determinism, both authors contradict the contemporary belief that women are condemned to madness because of their biological sex. In their exploration of the fragmentation of women, the feminist writers also denounce how the psychiatric system upholds patriarchal values. They open literature to the language of the ‘other’ by giving their heroines a voice, but also on reflecting on the silencing of women in their contemporary society.
