Pour une nouvelle représentation du monde rural : La Terre d’Émile Zola

Nicoletta Agresta

When Zola proposed his naturalist representation of the rural world in his novel La Terre, the critics and the public remained deeply shocked. Perhaps, beyond the rupture that Zola caused in rustic literature, the most flagrant revolution that the leader of Naturalism brought about was to have realistically illustrated the rural world and the social class of peasants, to have distanced himself from the traditional stereotypes of rustic literature while promoting a general image of the "peasant" and his milieu without concern for conventions. The aim of this work is to analyse the way in which Zola brings together the reality of the rural world and contemporary society, while levelling the different social classes into a single universe.
